The Gift: Great Gift Ideas for Everyone

Kenneth Hibbler, Contributing Writer

“Christmas time is here. Happiness and cheer…” we all know the words from Charlie Brown’s Christmas. While these words embody the season, the last few year or so have been tough. Christmas for many is synonymous with buying numerous gifts, racking up debt or family stress, especially with the unemployment rate on the rise.

So let’s say you’re in the holiday spirit, yet your pockets are still feeling the recession. Whatever will you do? Easy!

Here are some trendy, stand-out and affordable gifts for the recessionista who’s trying to put a smile on the faces of a few loved ones on Christmas day:

Mother: One of the hottest trends lately is GREEN: going green, being green, everything GREEN. For the sake of the Earth and for the sake of your wallets, present your nurturing mother with a surprisingly stylish all natural tote made of recycled water bottles. The Nordstrom Slouchy Eco Tote w/ bonus designed pouch is richly detailed, machine washable, and on’t break your bank! Hint: I suggest the yellow or green one. $21.99

Father: The fashion and style sense of our fathers seems to remain consistent through the years, whether we admire it or not. For a father, I suggest taking a non-conventional route and purchasing hats, vintage ties, or accessories from local second hand stores, such as Buffalo Exchange and even the Goodwill. With determination and a sharp eye you can find some one-of-a-kind (it will seem that way) clothing item that your dad can proudly show off and say “My kid got me this for Christmas!” $1-$20
Where to buy: local second hand stores

Significant other:
Her: Your special someone should already know that anything you give her comes from the heart, but what better way than to say it! The Love Note Necklace from Urban Outfitters not so subtly reminds her with a novelty note in mixed metals and ceramics. $18.
Him -I had the opportunity to review a book by a young suave brother by the name of Enitan Bereola. His literary offering, bearing his namesake, is a necessary self paced course on age old chivalry but for the young and fresh. Bereolaesque: The Contemporary Gentleman & Etiquette Book for the Urban Sophisticate – A cunningly formatted personal style and etiquette ‘manual’ chock full of tips on how to win the girl and look good while doing it (all the while turning the heads of all other girls and earning the respect of your fellow man!) $23.99.

Best Friend: If your friends are like my friends, they are fashionistas and trendsetter in their own right. For all bohemian, haute couture, utilitarian, and countless other sartorial styles and fashion fodder, give her/him the “Fashion Bible”: VOGUE. “Gifting” Vogue will give you a free subscription that can be given as an extra gift to your co-worker or other recessionistas you want to impress! $29.

Child: Ahhh! Christmas really is all about the kids (and those of us who are still big kids!). So you have to make sure you hit the bull’s eye with this one! Not to worry! Almost every single retailer will gladly let you know what the hottest toys are. It’s simply up to you to select based on the child’s likes and your budget. One of my favorite is the LeapFrog Text and Learn ‘game’ that looks like an oversized, hyper-neon pda. Besides giving the kiddos a chance to act like an adult, it comes with a subscription to Disney Family Fun! $14.99.

Co-worker: One of the coolest items I’ve seen on the market is the Retro Block IPod Speaker. What’s neater than having your favorite songs come out of Lego? A metallic gold or silver Lego! Your co-worker HAS to love this, well unless they don’t have an IPod! $25

Easy right? Well if not don’t stress too much. After all, Jesus is the reason for the season and Jesus is LOVE, so any gift you give with love from the heart is truly the best gift of all!
